Dogfights 2: Kamikaze

_2291

It was a weapon conceived in desperation yet horrifying in its destructive power. Young Japanese pilots were willing to turn themselves into human bombs, to attack the United States fleet in the Pacific during the Second World War.

Witness the first organised kamikaze attack in history as a survivor re-lives the terrifying scene. On 25th October 1944, in brutal fashion, a United States escort carrier was sunk. The success of the first mission unleashed a tidal wave of attacks.

At the same time, the Japanese unveiled an even more sinister suicide weapon, the rocket-powered Okha. A Japanese Okha veteran describes the training and mindset of a suicide pilot and United States navy veterans, who were onboard ships struck by Ohkas, tell of the enormous devastation this ‘flying torpedo’ could unleash.
