Living with the Enemy – A New Beginning

Living with the Enemy – A New Beginning

Sat December 20th at 11:00pm

Millions of Germans people had to start a new life. They have lost their family and their homes. Like Helmut Augustat from Königsberg.

He first seeks refuge with his Aunt in Berlin. Then he hears that ships are going from Warnemünde to East Prussia again. The news proves to be wrong, but Augustat stays on the coast. He becomes a teacher, meets his wife and starts a family.

Or like Christa Pfeiler. She comes from Königsberg too and and was there when her mother died. After the chaos of the war the Soviet authorities transported all the children still living in East Prussia to Germany. Christa Pfeiler is put in a childrens home. Then she is sent to a family in the Soviet zone. Eventually she goes to West Germany.

The partition of Germany becomes more pronounced after 1948. The former allies have become enemies. The Cold War deepens the split. Socialism in the East, democracy in the West. The monetary reform in the West zone and the following blockade of Berlin by the Soviets speed the division up. "Schaut auf diese Stadt - Keep your eyes on this city" - the words of Ernst Reuter are broadcast around the world in the days after the war.
