The second part of the deadly saga of the Solomons played out at the Santa Cruz Islands. In one terrible day of vicious combat, the USS Enterprise lost her sister ship, USS Hornet, and suffered dozens of casualties as bombs hit her flight deck. When the smoke cleared, Enterprise was the only American carrier left in the Pacific. For the US navy at Santa Cruz, survival became the ultimate battle.
