Tokyo, Japan is a beautiful modern landscape, dotted with high rise buildings and fabulous subway systems. But it was not always so.
During the twentieth century, the city suffered two major catastrophes. The first was the 1923 Great Kanto earthquake; the second, World War II and the firebombs of 1945, both of which devastated Tokyo’s cityscape.
After the war, Tokyo was completely reconstructed and its’ inhabitants became more determined than ever before to not allow catastrophe to strike on the same scale again. It was in this context that a massive underground network was built using the latest technology, designed to save the city the next time disaster strikes.
We venture beneath Tokyo’s bustling streets to explore this underground network.
