In the Uruguayan River Plate lies the wrecks of the Graf Spee the pride of Nazi Germany’s navy.
This films shows how Mensun Bound and his team explored this famous wreck using modern technologies like side-scan sonar to detect the wreck in the murky water. In the cemetery near the wreck, German sailor’s graves bear the simple inscription: Known unto God.
The programme relates the infamous history of the Graf Spee, which marauded British shipping in the early days of WW2 though her captain, Hans Langsdorff, ensured that no British merchant sailor died during these attacks.
Graf Spee was finally tracked down in the River Plate by three British destroyers - the HMS Ajax, Achilles and Exeter. Captain Langdorff chose to destroy his own ship while saving the crew then surrendered to the Allies.
