Boston and Philadelphia are both vibrant, modern American cities. Renowned for their parts in America’s revolutionary saga, both places boast rich and intriguing histories. In this compelling episode of ‘Cities of the Underworld’, Don Wildman peels away the layers of time to reveal the subterranean secrets of both cities, focusing specifically on their shared links with Freemasonry.
Firstly, Don transports viewers to Boston - the capital of Massachusetts and the largest city in New England. It has a population of almost 600,000, and a compelling revolutionary past. In the 1770s, Britain’s vice-like control of the thirteen colonies – which manifested itself in stringent taxation policies – prompted Bostonians to spearhead the American Revolution.
The Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party – as well as a number of early battles - occurred in and around the city. The Battle of Lexington and Concord, the Battle of Bunker Hill and the Siege of Bunker hill are indelibly etched upon the historic memories of most Bostonians. Today, the ‘Cradle of Liberty’ houses many historic sites relating to the city’s revolutionary heritage. Every year, thousands of tourists visit the National Historical Park and the Freedom Trail, as well as Boston’s many museums and galleries.
Don also journeys to Philadelphia – the largest city in Pennsylvania and the sixth most populous city in America. With more than 1.4 million inhabitants, Philadelphia is a major commercial, educational and historic centre. Like Boston, it played a pivotal role in the birth of the American Revolution, due to its central position amid the thirteen colonies.
It was the location for the First Continental Congress before the war, the Second Continental Congress – which signed the Declaration of Independence during the war – and the Constitutional Convention after the war. A number of the war’s key battles were fought in and around the city.
Yet the two cities have more in common than their shared revolutionary heritage. From the whispers of hidden tunnels and tombs beneath Boston's North End, to the incredible waterworld still intact under Philadelphia, the Freemasons have also left their mark on Boston and Philadelphia, leaving behind the blueprints to America’s rise.
The enigmatic influence of this legendary secret society stretches from the tevolutionary battles of Fort Mifflin to the secret struggles of the Underground Railroad. Don gives viewers exclusive access to newly discovered sites and clues, and delves into a part of America's past that can only be revealed in the underworld.
