In the brand new series of Mega Movers, we follow the relocation of the largest, heaviest and least mobile historic structures imaginable. In this episode, we reveal how large and small buildings are often moved incrementally and slowly – bit by bit. We observe the crucial planning process, explaining how skilled Mega Movers have to pay detailed and close attention to size, weight, weather and clearance.
Firstly, we construct a hypothetical scenario which could be drawn from the pages of a science fiction novel. We ask what would happen in the future if the Pentagon – the world’s largest office building – had to be moved, while operating at full-capacity. More than 3.7 million square feet of office space and nearly a million tonnes of weight would have to be transported.
We join one expert theorist as he lays out his plan for this extraordinary move. These same principles are practically put to the test when two thriving businesses - a general store and a funeral home – have to be moved with all their contents inside. For the general store, the mission entails the transportation of priceless antiques. For the funeral home, it means keeping caskets and embalming equipment from being destroyed.
