In the brand new series of Mega Movers, we follow the relocation of the largest, heaviest and least mobile historic structures imaginable. In this episode, they attempt the seemingly impossible – moving an airport. We observe the crucial planning process, explaining how the movers measure size, weight, weather, traffic and clearance.
These intrepid experts know that a one inch mistake can mean disaster. We follow their dangerous journeys, navigating over narrow bridges, avoiding power lines and turning sharp corners - all the while hoping the structures do not break apart. Always adding to the challenge is Mother Nature, who likes to throw a spanner in the works with surprises like spring mud, summer thunderstorms, floods and hurricanes.
In this momentous episode, our team travel to Denver International Airport. In terms of land size, it is the largest airport in America. The airport’s enormous Landside Terminal, with its famed white peaked fabric roof, spans million-and-a-half square feet. Our teams deploy the most heavy-lift equipment ever amassed for a move, combining it with an array of new technology. The site of this structure cruising through the airport is truly a miracle in motion.
In New York, at John F Kennedy International Airport, part of the famed TWA terminal has to be moved nearly a quarter of a mile. The 800 tonne triangular, glass-walled building is an unwieldy, unevenly distributed load. During the move, the terminal is at risk of toppling like a house of cards.
