A range of geology, climatology and archeology experts give their conclusions as to what life will be like on Earth after the human race dies out.
The two-hour special rely’s on experts' knowledge and understanding of history in order to predict the future. Experts from the fields of engineering, botany, ecology, biology, geology, climatology, and archeology will paint a picture of what Earth will look like in the days, weeks, months, years and millennia after humans are gone.
Clues to what could happen after years of no human activity can be found in both the demilitarised zone between North and South Korea as well as at Chernobyl.
Humans have barely set foot in the DMZ since 1953. As a result, in 55 years all traces have disappeared of 5,000-year-old rice paddies that had been carved into the landscape. Rare red-crowned cranes are now the new occupants of the marsh.
The area around Chernobyl has revealed just how quickly nature can bounce back. While rats and mice flourished initially, they disappeared, to be replaced by wild boar and other big predators like wolves.
Looking farther into the future, and using analyses based on the past, we see how nature will reclaim New York City. Eventually glass buildings topple, stone buildings crumble, successive freezing and thawing turn streets and sidewalks to rubble, ground water rises, subways flood, sewers crack and lightning ignites overgrown grass in Central Park, engulfing the city in flames.
We see what will become of a variety of environments. What kind of plant species will survive? Will the seas be filled with fish? Which animals will survive and which will die?The invincible cockroach would succumb to the cold and rats would starve or be lunch for hawks and falcons. It's predicted that America would have three times as many species of animals as Africa does today.
What will happen to power plants: will they turn into time bombs when they grind to a halt, poisoning the earth for eons? Will humans ever return? Will man begin the cycle again, excavating our ruins and trying to imagine what life was like before?
