Of all the officers in Adolf Hitler's inner circle, an unknown deputy rose through the ranks to influence the course of history, and the fate of millions. And then he mysteriously disappeared.
He was the power behind the Reich who facilitated the machinery of death. But despite his extraordinary might, he chose to remain in the shadows. Always behind the scenes, far from the public eye. This is a film about him, Martin Bormann, the man who stood in the Fuhrer's shadow.
The German government's official stance on Martin Bormann's fate is that he escaped from Hitler's Bunker, only to die several hours later on the Wiedenhammer Bridge on the night of 1st May 1945. The exact cause of death is unknown.
In 1965, 20 years after the war, the area was excavated for evidence. Nothing was found. Then in 1972, construction workers close to the site accidentally unearthed two human skeletons, one of them believed to be that of Bormann.
The skull was examined by two experts who compared it against Bormann's dental records. There were some doubts, but the German government quickly pronounced the case closed.
Just recently, scientists finally drew a sampling of DNA and determined conclusively that the bones excavated in 1972 were those of Martin Bormann. But worrying anomalies remain:
¨ In the 1990's, Secret Police archives of Paraguay are seized, revealing a detailed report on Martin Bormann's death in Ita, Paraguay in 1959.
¨ Forensic study of the skull reveals dental work undocumented by Bormann's Berlin dentist, as well as evidence of dental drift subsidence to work performed in 1945.
¨ The excavated skull is reported to have been encased in red clay - unexplainable in Berlin, a city built on sand, while Ita is built on red clay.
Who was the enigmatic, right-hand man to Adolf Hitler? What responsibility does he personally hold for atrocities of the Holocaust and prolonging of the most devastating war in world history? Why does the case defy resolution?
