Soviet Top Secret Weapons

Sat July 26th at 2:00pm

For the entire period of the Cold War, a large proportion of the Soviet Union's economy and massive scientific establishment was dedicated to the development and refinement of new and better weapons. During the 50s and 60s, the Soviet government's paranoia about Western technical superiority was at its height. It was so great that even the craziest sounding idea stood a chance of receiving massive state funding for its development, making the Soviet military-industrial complex the perfect breeding ground for technologically ambitious but ultimately unfeasible, even dangerous, weaponry.

‘Soviet Top Secret Weapons’ focuses on two weapons programs that were typical products of the Soviet military industrial system. The first project is the 50's vintage and NATO code-named Quebec class submarines. This class of submarines used a revolutionary propulsion system that allowed it to remain submerged far longer than its Western counterparts. It had one major drawback, however, it was prone to fire and explosion and was called by the sailors who served on it as the "Matchstick". Many accidents occurred that are only now being revealed.

The second project covered is the 60's vintage Khrushchev inspired Ekranoplan. This super secret ‘flying ship’ was nearly twice the size of a present day 747 and capable of carrying thousands of soldiers and their equipment or missiles over great distances at unheard of speeds and under radar detection. Khrushchev, with his love for the dramatic, believed that this wild and crazy sounding project would be a psychological and military blow to the West and directed massive state funds to its development. The Ekranoplan was far ahead of its time and even today seems incredible. Nothing comparable was ever produced in the West.
