1957: Central High School integrated
Nine African-American students enter the all white Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas under heavily armed guard. In 1954, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that racial segregation in public educational facilities was unconstitutional. In 1957, the first major confrontation over this decision came when African-American students attempted to integrate Central High School. Governor Orval Faubus surrounded the school with Arkansas National Guard troops and a showdown with federal officials ensued. On 24th September President Dwight Eisenhower sent 1,000 U.S. troops to Little Rock. The next day, the African-American students entered the school for the first time. The episode served as a catalyst for the integration of other segregated schools in the United States.
