1898: Philippines declares independence

During the Spanish-American War, Philippine rebel leader Emilio Aguinaldo proclaims the independence of his country after 300 years of Spanish rule. Supported by the United States, Aguinaldo made rapid gains against the Spanish. He also established Asia's first democratic republic, which survived until the United States formally took control of the nation in late 1898. In response, Aguinaldo launched a new revolt in February 1899--this time against the United States. The three-year conflict was characterized by guerrilla warfare and atrocities by U.S. troops. In 1901, Aguinaldo was captured, and in 1902 an end was declared to the Philippine insurrection. The Philippines achieved independence in 1946.
