By AD 1000 most of southern England had been divided into shires with fortified strongholds at their centres. The Midland counties of England are still known as the Shires; for example Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, and Staffordshire.

In England, Peter Sutcliffe, “the Yorkshire Ripper” is found guilty of killing 13 women and the attempted murder of 7 others. He is sentenced to a minimum of 30 years in jail.

24 May 1989
Sonia Sutcliffe, wife of the Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe, is awarded £600,000 by the High Court in London after successfully suing the satirical magazine Private Eye for libel. The figure is later reduced to £60,000 after the magazine appealed.
