In the early 1990s, the UK had a force of small carriers, destroyers, frigates, and submarines.

Japanese Prime Minister, Inukai Tsuyoshi, is assassinated in an attempted coup by members of the Japanese Navy. The coup ultimately failed, and has come to be known as the 15th May Incident.  
12 June 1944
The Second World War: Lieutenant John F. Kennedy receives the American Navy’s highest honour for gallantry for his heroic actions in saving the lives of his gunboat crew. The future president also receives a Purple Heart for wounds received during battle.

France withdraws its navy from the North Atlantic fleet of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Arthur Walker, a retired U.S. Navy officer, is found guilty of espionage for passing top-secret documents to his brother, who passed them on to Soviet agents.

The U.S. Navy frigate Constitution defeats the British frigate Guerriere in a furious engagement off the coast of Nova Scotia. The Constitution subsequently earns the nickname “Old Ironside.”

Englishman Matthew Webb, a 27-year-old merchant navy captain, becomes the first known person to successfully swim the English Channel.

The Second World War: Denmark abandons its policy of co-operation with German invasion forces with the start of a popular uprising which includes the scuttling of the remaining 30 ships of the Danish Navy.

Notorious pirate Edward Teach, known as Blackbeard, is killed off North Carolina’s Outer Banks during a bloody battle with a British navy force sent from Virginia.
5 December 1945
The legend of the so-called Bermuda Triangle is born in the Atlantic Ocean, as five U.S. Navy bombers from Fort Lauderdale in Florida disappear while flying over the area. No trace is ever found of any of the planes or the pilots.
