In economics, a period of low output and investment, with high unemployment. Specifically, the term describes two periods of crisis in world economy: 1873–96 and 1929 to the mid‐1930s (see Great Depression).
The Depression of 1873–96 centred on falling growth rates in the British economy but also affected industrial activity in Germany and the USA. The crisis in the British economy is now thought to have lasted longer than these dates suggest.
