Financial institution that uses funds deposited with it to lend money to companies or individuals, and also provides financial services to its customers. The first banks opened in Italy and Cataluña around 1400.

In 1900, half of the world's top ten banks were British; by 1950, the dominant banking nation had become the USA, with half of the world's top ten banks based there. In terms of assets, seven of the world's top ten banks in 1988 were Japanese.

A central bank (in the UK, the Bank of England) issues currency for the government, in order to provide cash for circulation and exchange. Commercial banks in the UK attract customers to deposit money with them mainly by offering either money transmission services, such as a cheque service, or interest on the money deposited, or some combination of the two. Banks are the single most important source of loans and overdrafts for companies.

Barings Bank, Britain’s oldest investment bank, collapse after "rouge trader" Nick Leeson loses over a billion pounds of the bank's money.

In North Hollywood, U.S.A bank robbers Larry Eugene Phillips Jr, and Emil Dechebal Matasareanu start a mass shootout with Los Angeles Police after robbing a bank. Both robbers are killed.

In America, The Kennewick Man, the remains of a prehistoric man, are found on the banks of the Columbia River near Kennewick, Washington.

President John Tyler vetoes a second attempt by Congress to re-establish the Bank of the United States. In response, angry supporters of the bank gathered outside the White House and burned an effigy of Tyler.

In England, 7 men are sentenced to a total of 100 years in prison after being found guilty of stealing £8 million from the Bank of America in London last year. At the time, the robbery was considered to be the largest of its kind.

Notorious pirate Edward Teach, known as Blackbeard, is killed off North Carolina’s Outer Banks during a bloody battle with a British navy force sent from Virginia.
