bail

The temporary setting at liberty of a person in legal custody on an undertaking (usually backed by some security, bonds or money, given either by that person or by someone else) to attend at a court at a stated time and place. If the person does not attend, the bail may be forfeited.

The Bail Act of 1976 presumes that a suspect will be granted bail, unless the police can give good reasons why not, for example, by showing that a further offence may take place.

Sid Vicious (real name Simon John Ritchie-Beverly), the lead singer of the punk-rock band The Sex Pistols, goes on trial in New York for the murder of his girlfriend Nancy Spungen. Having been released on bail, Vicious dies from a drugs overdose.

4 January 1972

Rose Heilbron becomes the first woman to be appointed a judge at the Old Bailey Court in London, England.

1 February 1978
Director Roman Polanski skips bail and flees to France after pleading guilty to charges of engaging in sex with a minor. Polanski has never returned to the US for fear of prosecution.
4 March 1976
At the Old Bailey in London the “Maguire seven” are all convicted of offensives in relation to aiding the IRA. In 1991, all of their convictions are quashed the by the Court of Appeal.
13 March 1961
The trial of five people known as Portland Spy for plotting to pass official secrets to the Soviet Union Ring begins at the Old Bailey in England.
14 April 2000
In England, Kenneth Noye is sentenced to life in prison by the Old Bailey in London for a road rage killing on the M25 motorway in 1996.

The trial of Jane Andrews, a former personal assistant to the Duchess of York, for the murder of her boy friend begins at the Old Bailey in London. Andrew’s is subsequently found guilty and sentenced to life.

At the Old Bailey in London, England two teenage brothers are cleared of the murder of 10-year-old Damilola Taylor.

In South Africa, Winnie Mandela, the wife of Nelson Mandela, is sentenced to 6 years in prison for her involvement in the kidnapping of four youths. She is, however, subsequently released on bail, and her sentence is later reduced to a suspended prison sentence.

In England, American-born doctor Hawley Crippen is convicted at the Old Bailey Court in London of poisoning his wife Cora. Crippen is the first person ever to be captured with the aid of wireless communication.
