attempt

In law, a partial or unsuccessful commission of a crime. An attempt must be more than preparation for a crime; it must involve actual efforts to commit a crime.

In the UK, attempt is covered under the Criminal Attempts Act 1981, which repealed the ‘suspected person offence’, commonly known as the ‘sus’ law.

Members of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic expedition team, who are attempting the first surface crossing of the Antarctic, met each other at the South Pole. The separate teams set off from opposite ends of the continent.

The Vietnam War: South Vietnamese President Ngo Dinh Diem survives a coup attempt when two South Vietnamese pilots bomb Diem’s presidential palace.

Austrian Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss is assassinated by Austrian Nazis in a failed coup attempt.

In South Africa, mercenary leader Colonel Mike Hoare is found guilty of hijacking a plane to escape from an aborted coup attempt in the Seychelles. Hoare is later sentenced to 10 years in prison.

President John Tyler vetoes a second attempt by Congress to re-establish the Bank of the United States. In response, angry supporters of the bank gathered outside the White House and burned an effigy of Tyler.
