adjutant

In military usage, an army officer who assists the officer commanding a battalion or regiment.

The adjutant has charge of the correspondence and official records, keeps the accounts, and prepares the officers' duty roster. By the authority of the commanding officer, the adjutant issues the daily orders and is generally responsible for the discipline and efficiency of the unit. When on active service he is also responsible for the unit's ammunition supply.

The appointment is greatly prized among young army officers and may be held for two, three, or four years. The adjutant general, who is the second military member of the Army Board, is entrusted with all matters pertaining to discipline and efficiency of the troops.
