Westphalia
Independent medieval duchy, incorporated in Prussia by the Congress of Vienna in 1815, and made a province in 1816 with Münster as its capital. Since 1946 it has been part of the German Land (region) of North Rhine‐Westphalia.
Westphalia included the Ruhr, the chief industrial area of Germany, and was the scene of violent fighting during the last stages of World War II. The kingdom of Westphalia, created by the French emperor Napoleon 1807–13, did not include the duchy, but was made up of Prussian lands west of the Elbe, Hessen, Brunswick, and Hannover.
