Sharpeville
Black township in South Africa, 65 km/40 mi south of Johannesburg and north of Vereeniging; 69 people were killed here when police fired on a crowd of anti‐apartheid demonstrators 21 March 1960.
The massacre took place during a campaign launched by the Pan‐Africanist Congress against the pass laws (laws requiring non‐white South Africans to carry identity papers). On the anniversary of the massacre in 1985, during funerals of people who had been killed protesting against unemployment, 19 people were shot by the police at Langa near Port Elizabeth.
