King of Macedonia from 359 BC. He seized the throne from his nephew, for whom he was regent, defeated the Greek city states at the battle of Chaeronea (in central Greece) in 338 and formed them into a league whose forces could be united against Persia. He was assassinated while he was planning this expedition, and was succeeded by his son Alexander the Great.
Philip's tomb was discovered at Vergina, northern Greece, in 1978.
