English painter. In the 1930s he was a founder‐member of the Euston Road School, which favoured a subdued representational style. He painted landscapes and, from 1947, three‐dimensional abstract reliefs and constructions, reviving the early ideas of the constructivists.
Even at its most severe, his work contained a romantic element which attracted a wider appreciation during the late 1950s and early 1960s than most similar art. He was awarded the CBE in 1959.
From 1954 to 1961 he was master of painting at Durham University, and was consulting designer for Peterlee New Town from 1955.
