Ancient region in central Europe, bounded on the north by the River Danube, on the west by Noricum, on the south by Dalmatia, and on the east by Moesia. It was subdued by Rome in 9 BC and was first included in the province Illyricum. After the suppression of the Illyrian revolt AD 7–9, Pannonia was organized as a separate province.
The emperor Trajan divided Pannonia into two provinces, Upper and Lower Pannonia, and these were further subdivided by the emperor Diocletian.
