British tabloid newspaper established in 1903. Politically, it is an independent national newspaper, broadly supporting the Labour party. Owned by the Mirror Group, it had a circulation of over 2 million in 1998. Its sister paper, the Sunday Mirror was established in 1963 and had a circulation of over 2,200,000 in 1998.
Founded by Lord Northcliffe, as a journal for ‘gentlewomen’, it was a failure after three months until he transformed it into the world's first daily illustrated paper. In the 1930s the newspaper changed again, by imitating the New York Mirror (1924–63) and becoming a tabloid. The Daily Mirror adopted characteristically big, bold headlines and vivid treatment of news and pictures which brought about a further rapid increase in sales to give it the largest daily circulation in Britain until challenged by The Sun in the 1970s.
