Italian archbishop of Canterbury from 1070. Following the Norman Conquest, he was the adviser of William (I) the Conqueror. As archbishop he rebuilt Canterbury Cathedral, replaced English clergy with Normans, enforced clerical celibacy, and separated the ecclesiastical from the secular courts.
His skill in theological controversy did much to secure the church's adoption of the doctrine of transubstantiation.
Lanfranc was born in Pavia, Italy. He entered the monastery of Bec, Normandy, in 1042, where he opened a school; St Anselm, later his successor, was his pupil there.
