Keitel, Wilhelm (1882–1946)

German field marshal in World War II, chief of the supreme command from 1938 and Hitler's chief military adviser. He dictated the terms of the French armistice in 1940 and was a member of the court that sentenced many officers to death for their part in the July Plot 1944. He signed Germany's unconditional surrender in Berlin on 8 May 1945. Tried at Nürnberg for war crimes, he was hanged.
