Kaiser

Title formerly used by the Holy Roman emperors, Austrian emperors 1806–1918, and German emperors 1871–1918. The word, like the Russian ‘tsar’, is derived from the Latin Caesar.

The Great War: Germany’s failed gambit
23 January 1920

The Dutch government refuses to extradite Wilhelm II to the Allies. The former Kaiser of Germany has been living in exile in the Netherlands since November 1918.

In Germany, Crown Prince Wilhelm becomes Kaiser Wilhelm II.
5 July 1914
In what became known as the “blank cheque”, Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany pledges his country’s unconditional support for whatever action Austria-Hungary chooses to take in its conflict with Serbia.
9 November 1919
Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicates from the German and Prussian throne.
14 December 1918
The newly-crowned Frederick, German-born and the brother-in-law of Kaiser Wilhelm II, renounces the Finnish throne.
