Johnston, Albert Sidney (1803–1862)
US general. In 1858 he quelled the Mormon revolt without bloodshed. On the outbreak of the Civil War, he joined the Confederates, but was mortally wounded at the Battle of Shiloh.
He was born in Kentucky and graduated from West Point military academy. After serving in the Mexican War 1846–48, he was appointed paymaster to the US army 1849.
