Johnston, Joseph Eggleston (1807–1891)

US military leader during the American Civil War 1861–65. Joining the Confederacy, he commanded the Army of Shenandoah 1861, the Army of Potomac 1861, and the Army of Tennessee 1863–64.

Johnston was born near Farmville, Virginia. He graduated from West Point military academy 1829, and fought in the Black Hawk War 1832 and the Seminole Wars 1835–42. As a military engineer, he served with distinction during the Mexican War 1846–48. He was the highest‐ranking regular army officer to resign on the outbreak of the Civil War and join the Confederacy. After the war, Johnston returned to private life, later serving in the US House of Representatives 1879–81 and as federal railroad commissioner 1887–91.
