Isa

Muslim Arabic name for the New Testament figure Jesus, regarded as a prophet in Islam. Muslims believe that Jesus was born of Mary, a virgin, but that it is blasphemy to think, as Christians do, that God would send himself to earth and then kill himself. They believe that people can earn forgiveness from God by repentance, and that Jesus was not killed on the cross but either died naturally or was taken to heaven by God.

The Koran (iv, 169) states:‘The Messiah Isa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), is only an apostle of Allah, and his word which he conveyed unto Maryam.’

The British ship the Lutine sink offs off the coast of Holland. The ship’s bell is salvaged from the wreck and is later presented to shipping insurers Lloyds of London. The Lutine Bell has been rung ever since to mark a maritime disaster.

In Australia, Lindy Chamberlain is sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of her nine week old baby who disappeared on a family trip into the outback. She claims the baby had been killed by a dingo which had come into the camp and taken the child from their tent. Chamberlain is later released and receives a pardon.

In Beirut, Lebanon, hostages Terry Waite, the special envoy of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and American University professor, Thomas Sutherland, are released by Islamic Jihad. Waite had been kidnapped in January 1987. Sutherland had disappeared in June 1985.

In England, the High Court rules that the feeding tubes keeping Tony Bland alive, a victim of the Hillsborough football disaster, can be withdrawn. His life support machine was turned off in February 1993 and he died the following month.

The cruise ship the Achille Lauro catches fire in the Indian Ocean causing the evacuation of all 1000 passengers on board. Two people are killed in the disaster.

The legend of the so-called Bermuda Triangle is born in the Atlantic Ocean, as five U.S. Navy bombers from Fort Lauderdale in Florida disappear while flying over the area. No trace is ever found of any of the planes or the pilots.
