Greek

The native peoples or inhabitants of ancient or modern Greece or people of Greek descent; also the language and culture. Modern Greek is an Indo‐European language, spoken in Greece and by Greek Cypriots; also by people of Greek descent, especially in Canada, the USA, and Australia.

In Cyprus, fighting between ethnic Turks and Greeks leaves sixteen people dead.

19 February 1978

Fifteen Egyptian commandos are killed in a gun battle with Greek Cypriot soldiers at Larnaca airport in Cyprus, whilst trying to solve a hostage crisis.

9 March 1956
British authorities order the deportation the Greek Cypriot leader, Archbishop Makarios, from Cyprus in attempt to restore order to the island.
10 March 1956
Riots and demonstrations break out in Cyprus following Britain’s decision to deport the head of the island's Greek Orthodox Church, Archbishop Makarios.

The Second World War: Germany takes control of the Greek Island Crete.
28 June 1948
The Soviet Union expels Yugoslavia from the Communist Information Bureau (COMINFORM) for the latter’s position on the Greek civil war.
15 July 1974
On the island of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios is overthrown in a coup led by Greek officers in the National Guard. Nikos Sampson, a former EOKA leader, is appointed President.

More than 10,000 Greek-Cypriots and British left-wing activists protest through the centre of London in support of an independent Cyprus.

A United Nations ceasefire comes into force in Cyprus temporarily ending the conflict between Greek and Turkish Cypriots.

Politician Alexandros Panagoulis attempts to assassinate the Greek dictator Colonel Papadopoulos in Athens.

King Constantine I abdicates from the Greek throne in favour of his son King George II.

The wife of assassinated U.S. President John Kennedy, 39 year old Jacqueline Kennedy, marries Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis.
