Formigny, Battle of

Battle fought on 15 April 1450 near the coast of Normandy, France, during the Hundred Years' War, in which Clermont's French forces defeated the English forces of Thomas Kyriell. The latter was making an attempt to recover Normandy. The battle was decided with the arrival of Richemont.

Kyriell led 800 men‐at‐arms and 3,000 archers against Clermont's force of 5,000. The English took up a defensive position covering a bridge and were initially successful in throwing back French attacks and then following up to capture their artillery. However, the arrival of Richemont's 2,000 soldiers in the English left rear decided the encounter. Kyriell was captured and his men dispersed; there would be no reconquest.
