European

The natives and inhabitants of the continent of Europe and their descendants. Europe is multicultural and, although most of its languages belong to the Indo‐European family, there are also speakers of Uralic (such as Hungarian) and Altaic (such as Turkish) languages, as well as Basque.

King William III of England joins the League of Augsburg, later known as the Grand Alliance, a European coalition against France.

Glasgow Celtic becomes the first British football club to win the European Cup beating Inter Milan 2-1 in Lisbon.

Manchester United becomes the first British football club to win the European Cup for 15 years, beating Bayern Munich 2-1 in the final in Barcelona, thus completing a treble of the English Premier League and F.A. Cup.

The United States, the Soviet Union, Canada and every European nation (except Albania) sign the Helsinki Final Act at the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe.

The European Court of Human Rights rules against the British Government and in favour of a British businessman who had his phone tapped whilst on trial for handling stolen goods. The Court ruled that this practice was illegal and a breach of the European Convention.

A European coalition defeats the invading Ottoman Empire at the Battle of Vienna in Austria.

In a national referendum in Estonia, the country votes to join the European Union.

In golf, the European team captained by Tony Jacklin end 28 years of American domination by winning the Ryder Cup.

In what becomes known as “Black Wednesday” the British government suspends its membership of the European Exchange Rate Mechanism.

The European Court of Justice issues its landmark “Bosman ruling” which revolutionises football transfers in Europe allowing players to move club for free when their contract comes to an end.
17 December 1981
James Dozier, Chief of Staff of NATO’s Southern European land forces, is kidnapped from his home in Verona, Italy by the left-wing terrorist group the Red Brigade. Dozier is later rescued by the Italian authorities. 
18 December 1912
In England, the ‘Piltdown Man’ is discovered in Sussex. It’s claimed to be the fossilised skull and remains of the earliest known European but in 1953 it is proved to be a hoax - the skull was that of an orangutan.
23 December 1620
One week after the Mayflower arrived at Plymouth harbour in present-day Massachusetts, U.S.A. construction of the first permanent European settlement in New England begins.
24 December 1979

Ariane 1, the first European-built rocket, is launched into space.

3 January 1977

Roy Jenkins MP announces that he is to leave the House of Commons to become President of the European Commission.

2 December 1823
U.S. President James Monroe announces the ‘Monroe Doctrine’, forbidding European interference in the American hemisphere and asserting U.S. neutrality in regard to future European conflicts.
