Ebert, Friedrich (1871–1925)

German socialist politician. He was the first president of the German Republic, from February 1919 until his death. He became socialist leader of the Reichstag in 1916 and succeeded Prince Max of Baden as chancellor in 1918.

Ebert was born in Heidelberg, trained as a saddler, and helped to found a saddlers' union. In 1894 he became editor of the Bremen Burgerzeitung, a socialist paper, then secretary of the Bremen branch of the Socialist Party.

Always a moderate, Ebert did much to hold together the Weimar system in its early years.
