US television drama series, broadcast by the NBC network from 1994. It depicts the professional and personal lives of the medical staff at the emergency room of an inner‐city hospital in Chicago, Illinois. The series was created by best‐selling writer Michael Crichton, who executive produces the programme along with John Wells (who is also executive producer of The West Wing), and Christopher Chulack. A critical and commercial success since its inception, the series has won more than 20 Emmy Awards.

Stars include Noah Wyle as doctor John Carter, Goran Visnijic as doctor Luka Kovac, Laura Innes as chief of staff Kerry Weaver, Maura Tierney as nurse and medical student Abby Lockhart, and Alex Kingston as surgeon Elizabeth Corday.

Other characters include Ming‐Na as doctor Jing‐Mei, Sherry Stringfield as doctor Susan Lewis, Mekhi Phifer as resident Gregory Pratt, Sharif Atkins as doctor Michael Gallant, Parminder Nagra as medical student Neela Rasgotra, and Linda Cardellini as nurse Samatha Taggart. Early stars included George Clooney as doctor Doug Ross, Anthony Edwards as doctor Mark Greene, and Julianna Margulies as nurse Carol Hathaway. Recurring guest starts have included US actors Alan Alda and Sally Field.
