Dupleix, Joseph-François (1697–1763)
Governor general of the French East India Company 1741–54. He wanted to establish an extensive French empire in India and, through skilful diplomacy with local Indian rulers, briefly achieved French domination within the Carnatic (southeastern India), capturing Madras (now Chennai) in 1746 and defending Pondicherry against the English in 1748. His wider aims were frustrated by British general Robert Clive, and Dupleix was recalled to France in 1754.
