In the novel Dracula (1897) by Bram Stoker, the caped count who, as a vampire, drinks the blood of beautiful women. The original of Dracula is thought to have been Vlad Tepes, or Vlad the Impaler, ruler of medieval Wallachia, who used to impale his victims and then mock them.
Tepes' father took the name Dracul from the knightly order of the Dragon. Tepes succeeded to the Wallachian throne in 1456.
