Defence, Ministry of

UK government department created in 1964 from a temporary Ministry of Defence established after World War II together with the Admiralty, Air Ministry, and War Office. It is responsible for defence policy and for control and administration of the armed services, with the aim of protecting the UK and its overseas territories and supporting the government's foreign policy. It is headed by the secretary of state for defence, supported by three junior ministers. There are 37 executive agencies (2004). It is the largest central government department, with over 100,000 civilian staff (2004). The defence secretary is Des Browne, from 2006.

The Ministry of Defence claims that a British naval frigate, HMS Andromeda, has been deliberately rammed into by an Icelandic gunboat in the Atlantic. The ‘attack’ was one of several incidents between Britain and Iceland with regard to disputed fishing territory.

Israeli defence minister Ariel Sharon resigns after an inquiry concluded that he had failed to act to prevent the deaths of hundreds of Lebanese refugees by Christian militias.

The Soviet Union and the People’s Republic of China sign a mutual defence and assistance treaty.

In England, Ministry of Defence assistant secretary Clive Ponting resigns. Ponting become famous for passing information to an M.P about the sinking of the Argentinean ship the General Belgrano by British forces during the Falklands War.

A bomb blast in Colombo, Sir Lanka, kills nineteen people, including the deputy defence minister.
17 March 1948
Belgium, Britain, France, Luxembourg and the Netherlands sign the Treaty of Brussels, creating the defence pact the Western European Union.

Jordon and Egypt sign a defence agreement.

Former South African defence minister General Magnus Malan is one of the 20 people charged with the murder of 13 black people in 1987. Magnus, along with the other defendants is later acquitted.

The American Secretary of State for Defence, Robert S. McNamara, announces that he will resign to assume the presidency of the World Bank.

Europe’s largest defence contractor BAE Systems is established, with the merger of British Aerospace and Marconi Electronic Systems.

In Greece, 15 members of the left-wing terrorist organisation ‘November 17’ are convicted of various offences by a court in Athens. The group were responsible for the assassination of Brigadier Stephen Saunders the British defence attaché to Greece in June 2000.
18 December 2006
Following a poor performance for the Republican Party in the Congressional mid-term elections, explained largely by America’s failing policy in Iraq, U.S. Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld resigns.
