Darnley, Henry Stewart or Stuart, Lord Darnley (1545–1567)

English aristocrat, second husband of Mary Queen of Scots from 1565, and father of James I of England (James VI of Scotland).

On the advice of her secretary, David Rizzio, Mary refused Darnley the crown matrimonial; in revenge, Darnley led a band of nobles who murdered Rizzio in Mary's presence. Darnley was assassinated in 1567. He was knighted and became Earl of Ross and Duke of Albany in 1565.

He was born in England, the son of the 4th Earl of Lennox (1516–1571) and Lady Margaret Douglas (1515–1578), through whom he inherited a claim to the English throne. Mary was his first cousin. Mary and Darnley were reconciled after the murder of Rizzio in 1566, but soon Darnley alienated all parties and a plot to kill him was formed by Bothwell. Mary's part in it remains a subject of controversy.
