Clark, Mark Wayne (1896–1984)

US general in World War II. In 1942 he became Chief of Staff for ground forces, and deputy to General Eisenhower. He led a successful secret mission by submarine to get information in north Africa to prepare for the Allied invasion, and commanded the 5th Army in the invasion of Italy. He remained in this command until the end of the war when he took charge of the US occupation forces in Austria.

Clark was born at Madison Barracks, New York, and educated at the military academy of West Point. He fought in France in World War I and between the wars held various military appointments in the USA. He was deputy US secretary of state 1947, and commander‐in‐chief of the United Nations forces in the Korean War 1952–53.
