Chamberlain, (Joseph) Austen (1863–1937)

British Conservative politician, elder son of Joseph Chamberlain; foreign secretary 1924–29. He shared the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1925 with Charles G Dawes for his work in negotiating and signing the Pact of Locarno, which fixed the boundaries of Germany. In 1928 he also signed the Kellogg–Briand pact to outlaw war and provide for peaceful settlement of disputes.

He was elected to Parliament in 1892 as a Liberal–Unionist, and after holding several minor posts was chancellor of the Exchequer 1903–06. During World War I he was secretary of state for India 1915–17 and member of the war cabinet in 1918. He was chancellor of the Exchequer 1919–21 and Lord Privy Seal 1921–22, but failed to secure the leadership of the party in 1922, as many Conservatives resented the part he had taken in the Irish settlement of 1921.

Neville Chamberlain becomes British Prime Minister following the retirement of Stanley Baldwin.
13 September 1982
Lindy Chamberlain appears in court in Australia, accused of killing her nine week old baby girl. Chamberlain is found guilty but maintain her innocence. She and her husband are both later pardoned and new evidence emerges to show that she did not kill her child.

British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, French Prime Minister Edouard Daladier, Italian leader Benito Mussolini and German leader Adolf Hitler sign the Munich Agreement, ceding the Sudetenland to Germany. 
29 October 1982
In Australia, Lindy Chamberlain is sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of her nine week old baby who disappeared on a family trip into the outback. She claims the baby had been killed by a dingo which had come into the camp and taken the child from their tent. Chamberlain is later released and receives a pardon.
