Bute, John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute (1713–1792)
British Tory politician, prime minister 1762–63. On the accession of George III in 1760, he became the chief instrument in the king's policy for breaking the power of the Whigs and establishing the personal rule of the monarch through Parliament.
Bute succeeded his father as Earl in 1723, and in 1737 was elected a representative peer for Scotland. His position as the king's favourite and supplanter of the popular prime minister Pitt the Elder made him hated in the country. He resigned in 1763 after the Seven Years' War.
