Amendment, Eighteenth

Amendment to the US Constitution, ratified in 1919, prohibiting the manufacture, sale, and transport of alcohol. It was enforced by the Volstead Act in 1919 but repealed by the Twenty‐First Amendment in 1933. (See also Prohibition.)

The Eighteenth Amendment was the culmination of a long campaign by the Anti‐Saloon League, established in 1893, and by church and women's organizations and temperance societies. The law, however, was widely ignored, and public opinion forced its repeal in 1933.

16 January 1919
The 18th Amendment to the US Constitution, prohibiting the 'manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors for beverage purposes', achieves the necessary two-thirds majority for state ratification, and thus becomes the law of the land.

27 February 1922

The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, providing for female suffrage, is unanimously declared constitutional by the Supreme Court.

22 March 1974
The Equal Rights Amendment is passed by the U.S. Senate, but in the following years fails to receive ratification by all states.

30 March 1870
The 15th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is adopted, granting African-American men the right to vote

4 June 1919
The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, guaranteeing women the right to vote, is passed by Congress and sent to the states for ratification, which it receives 8 days later.

30 June 1970
The Vietnam War: The Senate passes the Cooper-Church Amendment, an attempt to limit the U.S. President’s power to fund U.S. Army activity in Cambodia. A diluted version of the amendment is eventually adopted by Congress in 1971.

28 July 1868
The 14th Amendment, guaranteeing African Americans citizenship and all its privileges, is officially adopted into the U.S. Constitution.

18 August 1920
The 19th Amendment to the American Constitution, guaranteeing women the right to vote, becomes law.

26 August 1920
United States of America ratifies the 19th Amendment to the Constitution granting women the right to vote.

28 August 1917
U.S. President Woodrow Wilson is picketed by woman suffragists in front of the White House, who demand that he support an amendment to the Constitution that would guarantee women the right to vote.
