African

People who are native to or inhabitants of the continent of Africa, especially of sub‐Saharan Africa. The region is culturally heterogeneous with numerous distinctive ethnic and sociolinguistic groups. There are three major language families: Niger‐Congo, Hamito‐Semitic (Afro‐Asiatic), and Chari‐Nile (Sudanic). Minor language groups include Khoisan.

President Abraham Lincoln issues the Emancipation Proclamation, which legally frees all of the African American slaves in Confederate states. Though the Proclamation affects few slaves immediately, it encourages others to escape. For more, see our in-depth article on the American Civil War.

The South African Native National Congress is founded. It later changes its name to the African National Congress.

10 January 1989

As part of an arrangement to decrease Cold War tensions and end a brutal war in Angola, Cuban troops begin their withdrawal from the African nation.

The central African country of Chad declares its independence from France.

13 January 1990

L. Douglas Wilder is elected governor of Richmond, Virginia in the U.S.A. He becomes the first African American governor.

19 January 1990

South African police use strong arm tactics to disperse demonstrations against rebel cricketers who are defying a ban on playing in segregated South Africa.

26 January 2005

Condoleezza Rice is confirmed as the US Secretary of State. She is the highest ranking African-American woman ever to serve in a presidential cabinet.

In South Africa, four police officers, appearing before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, admit to the 1977 killing of Stephen Biko, a leader of the South African 'Black consciousness' movement.

South African President F.W. De Klerk lifts the Government ban on the African National Congress.
3 February 1960
British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan addresses the South African Houses of Parliament, speaking of a 'wind of change' blowing through the continent of Africa.
10 February 1989
Ronald H. Brown is elected chairman of the Democratic Party National Committee. He was the first African American to hold the top position in a major political party in the US.
2 March 1807
The U.S. Congress abolishes the African slave trade.
3 March 1991
In America, an amateur video captures the beating of Rodney King by Los Angeles police officers. When the officers later stand trial, they are acquitted, sparking riots amongst the African-American community.
7 March 1959
Kanyama Chiume, one of the leaders of the Nyasaland African Congress (NAC), an independence movement in the British territory of Nyasaland in central Africa, flees to London to escape arrest.
9 March 1841
The U.S. Supreme Court rules that the African slaves who seized control of the Amistad slave ship had been illegally forced into slavery and therefore free under American law.
13 March 1865
The Confederate States of America, during the civil war, reluctantly agree to the use African American troops.
18 March 1992
South Africans back a mandate for ending the apartheid.

Mohandas Gandhi, then a young Indian lawyer working in South Africa, refuses to comply with racial segregation rules on a South African train and is forcibly ejected from the carriage.

In South Africa, the African National Congress releases a statement from its imprisoned leader Nelson Mandela calling upon anti-apartheid supporters to fight for the cause.

In America, Alabama Governor George Wallace ends his blockade of the University of Alabama and allows two African American students to enrol.
12 June 1987
Former leader of the Central African Republic, Jean-Bedel Bokassa, is sentenced to death for crimes committed during his 13-year rule of the country. The sentence is later commuted to life in prison.
13 June 1967
America President, Lyndon Johnson, appoints Thurgood Marshall to the Supreme Court. Marshall is the first African-American Judge to receive such a position.
15 June 1877
Henry Ossian Flipper becomes the first African American cadet to graduate from the United States Military Academy at West Point.
16 June 1976
Thousands of schoolchildren in the South African township of Soweto near Johannesburg begin a revolt against the Government instruction that teachers must teach Afrikaans in black schools. More than 1,000 people – including many children - are killed in the rioting.

The Second World War: General Erwin Rommel captures the North African port of Tobruk in Libya.

One of the worst riots in U.S. history breaks out on 12th Street in the heart of Detroit’s predominantly African-American inner city. Four days later the riot ends with 43 people killed.

The 14th Amendment, guaranteeing African Americans citizenship and all its privileges, is officially adopted into the U.S. Constitution.

The African state of Dahomey, later renamed Benin, declares independence from France.

In South Africa, ANC leader Nelson Mandela is arrested and later jailed for attempting to overthrow the South African Government.

West African peacekeepers start to patrol the wart torn Liberian capital Monrovia following a statement issued by the country's President, Charles Taylor, announcing his resignation.

The South African-born British athlete, Zola Budd, accidentally tangles with American Mary Decker during the women's 3,000m final at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Decker falls and is unable to complete the race, whilst Budd finishes 7th.

In America, James Meredith, the first African American to attend the University of Mississippi, graduates with a degree in political science. His enrolment in the university had originally been met with deadly riots, and he subsequently attended class under heavily armed guard.

Jomo Kenyatta, leader of the Kenyan independence movement, is released by British colonial authorities after nearly nine years of imprisonment and detention. Two years later, Kenya achieved independence and Kenyatta became prime minister. Once portrayed as a menacing symbol of African nationalism, he brought stability to the country and defended Western interests during his 15 years as Kenyan leader.

Negotiations to bring about a ceasefire in Rhodesia between the government and the African National Council collapse.

While visiting family in Money, Mississippi, 14-year-old Emmett Till, an African American from Chicago, is brutally murdered for flirting with a white woman four days earlier.

U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Guion S. Bluford becomes the first African American to travel into space onboard the space shuttle Challenger.

In America, Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus uses the National Guard to prevent nine African American students from entering Central High School in Little Rock.
6 September 1966
South African Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd is assassinated in the Parliament in Cape Town by Dimtric Tsafondas.
7 September 1992
24 people are killed by South African soldiers at an ANC demonstration at the border of Ciskei in South Africa.

In America, four young African-American girls are killed when a bomb planted by the Ku Klux Klan explodes at a Church in Birmingham, Alabama.
21 September 1989
After receiving Senate approval, General Colin Powell becomes the first African American to be appointed chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
1 October 1962
African American student James Meredith attends the University of Mississippi campus in Oxford, U.S.A. under armed guard. Meredith’s presence sparks a full-scale riot in which two people are killed and hundreds injured.
6 October 1953
Britain sends troops to British Guiana as political unrest breaks out in the African colony.
2 November 1995
Former South African defence minister General Magnus Malan is one of the 20 people charged with the murder of 13 black people in 1987. Magnus, along with the other defendants is later acquitted.
7 November 1989
Lieutenant Governor Douglas Wilder, becomes the first elected African American state governor in American history, winning the Governorship in Virginia.
16 November 2004
American President George W. Bush announces that he is to nominate national security adviser Condoleezza Rice to become the new Secretary of State. Upon confirmation, Rice becomes the first African-American women to hold this position.

The French colony Ubangi-Shari adopts the name the name Central African Republic as it becomes an autonomous territory within the French Community.
4 December 1977
Jean-Bédel Bokassa proclaims himself Emperor Bokassa I of the Central African Empire.
9 December 1962
The East African country Tanganyika gains independence from Britain.
10 December 1961
Albert Luthuli, leader of the banned African National Congress in South Africa, is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for trying to end apartheid.
31 December 1963
