Work published immediately after the death of Charles I 1649. Being written in the first person, it was ascribed to Charles himself. It promoted Charles's piety and the image of his death as martyrdom. John Gauden (1605–1662), who became bishop of Worcester, claimed that he started the work about 1647, and submitted it to Charles, but those in favour of Charles's authorship say that he wrote the first six chapters before 1645; that is, before the battle of Naseby.
