Irish essayist, playwright, and politician. Born in Dublin, he entered the Life Guards, and then settled in London. He founded the journal The Tatler (1709–11), in which Joseph Addison collaborated. They continued their joint work in the Spectator (1711–12), also founded by Steele, and The Guardian (1713). He also wrote plays, such as The Conscious Lovers (1722). In 1713 Steele was elected to Parliament. He was knighted in 1715.
